Healthy Breakfast Ideas

Healthy BreakfastMorning everyone and happy Sunday! It is starting today the Farmhouse Breakfast Week (20th -26th January 2013), an annual campaign which aims to encourage us all to eat healthy breakfast and include more variety.

We all have heard it before: Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper but then, because of our hectic life, we usually end up skipping breakfast or just having a coffee or fatty, unhealthy food on the go.

Why eat breakfast?

  • Breakfast eaters tend to be slimmer than breakfast skippers.
  • Eating breakfast can aid concentration and mental performance at work and at school.
  • It provides you with the nutrients and energy needed for an active lifestyle.
  • Research shows that breakfast eaters are less depressed and have lower levels of stress than breakfast skippers.

So if you are a breakfast skipper, you now have more good reasons to start making time in the morning for breakfast.
The secret? Just set the clock 5/10 minutes earlier…rise and shine and you will have enough time to make and enjoy a very healthy and delicious breakfast. It will really make a difference.

Ideas for Healthy Breakfast

1. Fruit smoothies:

  1. 2 pieces of fruit
  2. 1 handful of seeds and nuts
  3. Orange juice or soya milk/rice milk/almond milk

Blitz & enjoy!
This breakfast will make 2 of your 5 a day or, in other words, 40% of your daily intake of fruit and vegetables.

2. Veggie smoothies
Try something new and swap fruit with vegs. Fibres will make you feel full and satisfied.

In this yummy smoothie below (recipe and photo by Deliciously Ella) , Spinach and Avocado have been beautifully blended with  Apple and Pear!

And I also love the stunning combinations experimented by Kristin from the Fancy Sprout, where fruit and vegs are healthly mixed with seeds.

3. Skinny ‘English breakfast’
Let’s admit it, we all love a full English breakfast. Getting rid of all the fatty elements and introducing healthier options is really quick and easy :

  1. 1 slice of brown bread
  2. 1 scramble egg cooked with 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil & herbs
  3. 75 g smoked salmon
  4. 4/5 cherry tomatoes

and this week get involved and share your breakfast with the nation by taking part in #BreakfastWatch. Simply upload photos of your breakfast with the tag #BreakfastWatch via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest and they’ll be shared with breakfast lovers across the country.

One lucky social participant will be chosen at random and offered the choice of either a 5* luxury hotel break for 2 or a family ‘glamping’ stay for 4 at a Featherdown Farm. Another good reason to have breakfast!

Hi, Laura. Thanks for sharing these important tidbits. I, too, enjoy smoothies. They’re such a great way to get in some of our daily fruits and veggies.

Keep up the good work. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
